If you've been away from Smyrna for awhile you might be in for a shock! In 1989, Orme Campbell High School and F.T. Wills High School merged to form a new Smyrna High School. Prior to the merger, Campbell students were known as the Green and White "Panthers" and Wills students were known as the Red and Black "Tigers". The students united together in selecting new colors, Royal Blue and Silver, and a new mascot, the "Spartans".
In 1990, the courts overruled the name change of the school (due to stipulations in the original deed restrictions on the property that whatever school was sited there must be named for the Campbell family), and the name Campbell High School was reinstated. Since the ruling pertained only to the school name, it was decided the new colors and the new mascot would be left unchanged. Ironically, beginning in the 97-98 school year, the school was relocated to the site of the original Wills High School but retained the Campbell name in order to maintain a consistent identity.
Today, if you stood on Ward Street (the road that connected the old Wills/Nash campuses) you would find an enormous school grounds. On the left side of campus sits the old Nash gym, which was originally the Nash Middle School building, and on the right, the old Wills High facility. Connecting the two is a vast cafeteria. It is possible to walk around the school and see the original brick walls of the old Nash and Wills schools. There is also a building of science labs at the rear of the school. The Fine Arts classes were recently rebuilt, adding a new chorus room, band room, and replacing the orchestra room. There was also a new greenhouse and two-story addition, which houses many courses not previously offered by the school.
